How four ambitious utilities united to champion choice in Ontario’s energy sector

It’s hard to believe that 2017 is coming to a close so quickly. Looking back, Alectra has had a powerful year.

In fact, it was over a year ago that we announced we would be undergoing a merger with Enersource, Horizon Utilities and PowerStream, and acquiring Brampton Hydro to give families and businesses better energy solutions. As a result, Alectra is now the second largest municipally-owned utility in North America, and is privileged to serve nearly one million people in the Greater Golden Horseshoe Area.

Our brand platform has never been clearer: Customer Focus, Respect, Innovation, Safety and Excellence are what drive our team every day.

Now more than ever, our focus is on delivering fairness and choice to Ontarians. We know the future of our industry is rooted in offering stakeholders better flexibility, increased transparency, and more sustainable solutions. But none of these ambitions are achievable without a strong team.

One of Alectra’s core values is to create a culture of inclusiveness and diversity, and we showed our commitment by signing the Leadership Accord on Gender Diversity for the Electricity Industry, championing united action to promote equality and fairness throughout our workforce.

We’ve Stayed Connected to Keep You Informed

Since the merger, we have been focused on being a true energy ally to our customers and our employees. We’ve worked hard to establish effective communication channels that provide timely updates about power outages, offer helpful energy-saving tips, and share important company information. We’ve also launched a fresh corporate landing page, blog site and several social media accounts to tell our story.

Our aim is to bring you a more informed engagement experience and we invite you to connect with us through our integrated LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Instagram channels.

We’ve Supported Neighbouring Communities 

We recognize the importance of economic efficiency, social equity and environmental accountability, and through these values we established a Community Support program to fund local organizations that promote sustainability.

As a result, we’ve supported numerous charities and not-for-profits through sponsorship and donations, as well as employee fundraising efforts with the United Way, Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, YWCA Hamilton and Barrie, Peel Children’s Centre, Mississauga Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, and the Ride to Conquer Cancer.

Our efforts even took us across the border, where we assisted with power restoration in Rochester, New York following extensive wind-storm damage, as well as in Atlanta, Georgia in the wake of Hurricane Irma.

We’ve Been Recognized for Our Work

This year we expanded our Advantage Power Pricing (APP) program by offering three trial price plans to give residential customers more electricity options. I’m honoured that we were recognized for our industry-leading work at the Peak Load Management Alliance (PLMA) conference in Nashville, Tennessee, and received a Thought Leader Award for the success of this pilot.

The future of energy is moving rapidly from powering systems to empowering people, and although we’ve accomplished a lot this year, we’re still working hard to provide additional value to everyone we serve. As 2018 approaches, we’re excited to see how we’ll continue to evolve the energy in our homes, workplaces and communities with you.
